Conversation with the Chair, Dr. Mel Finkenberg
Department of Kinesiology & Health Science

COMMITMENTKinesiology and Heath Science has always been one of the forerunners of technology in the College of Education from first web-site to in-house training of faculty.   They have recently provided a new computer lab; provide technology in the classroom by providing students with access to heart rate monitors, peak motion analysis systems, and metabolic analysis system with pulmonary function capabilities.  The department has always been one of the leaders in providing each classroom space capabilities of computers, Internet and projection capabilities.

STRENGTHS - Since the last visit all of the above has been attained plus a EMG retainer system for the newly approved athletic training program.

WEAKNESSES - As any program would want, multiple systems listed above would be great but more of the motion analysis system would be top on the list.  As you can tell providing hands-on equipment to be used in the classroom and by faculty has always been important.  Funds are the reason further expansion has not occurred.  They take great pride in providing exposure to minimally one piece of equipment necessary for each major with the necessary equipment.

The only weakness the department has is funding.

PLANS FOR IMPROVEMENT - Bod pods or fat analysis systems and expansion of athletic training equipment.

Dr. Finkenberg responds to specific questions:

What changes have been made to the conceptual framework since the previous visit?
The department of kinesiology work hand in hand with College of Education framework. http://www.education.sfasu.edu/ncate/conceptual/COE%20Conceptual%20Framework.htm

What data (evidence) exists to suggest candidates know how to use technology in the content they teach?  Faculty strive to use multi media format with assignments, utilize webct and knowledge of equipment of their area. Discussion board participation is required in selected classes.

What technologies are used to maintain, summarize, and analyze your department's assessment system?  Use COE – FileMaker Pro and created their own data base.

What opportunities do candidates have to use technology for instruction during field or clinical practice?
That is handled through the Secondary Education program.

How does your department support the use of technology in (faculty) instruction?
The department chair provides computers for faculty in offices and classrooms with standard software plus additional software that provide research data. Department provides workshops and in house support to assist in the use of all technology.

What technology has the department made available to students?
All of the equipment listed including video and digital equipment are available for student use.

What technology has the department made available to instructors? (office, teaching, presenting....)
Besides the standard equipment and software, PowerPoint, excel and word utilization of PowerBooks and mobile capabilities to relocate are provided.

Does your dept have a technology plan or committee that provides for the needs of education candidates?
The department work collective as a faculty to find out what faculty need and work hard at providing at least one example of all pieces of equipment that might be necessary within a program area.  The Department chair has a open door policy along with faculty meeting for brainstorming ideas.

Does your dept have a technology plan or committee that provides for the needs of faculty?
A faculty committee has been set up to research all proposals and present all data findings.
