I talked with the dean today. John Leonard joined us near the end of this meeting.
We have changed our plans somewhat so we cannot meet until NEXT FRIDAY at 1:30 in room 118.
In the interim, I will be modifying the survey to accommodate the COE strategic plan and the conceptual frameworks and I will be making it much more user-friendly. This Friday, Steve, Ed, and Robert will begin laying the foundation for our survey at this site: http://express.perseus.com/perseus/asp/login.aspx You may wish to sign up and try out this user-friendly survey construction site for your own personal teaching needs.
In general, we decided:
1 – to create a separate page of the NCATE rept. We will call it: UNIT TECHNOLOGY REPORT
2 – this page will Summarize activity at the UNIT level, then the DEPARTMENT level, and include the SPA PROGRAM Technology reports (similar to our existing plans). Our survey results will also be integrated throughout and we are hoping to develop an aligned linked CHART(s) to facilitate a more graphic understanding about how and where technology is being used in the COE. We will include a section of what was discovered and what we plan to do about it and hopefully by the time the report is written, we may actually be acting on some of those recommendations. It was acknowledged that a technology committee will continue to play a key role for the COE beyond the NCATE visit.
3 – We will still need to divide up and INTERVIEW THE CHAIRS of the 6 STANDARDS COMMITTEES (and Leonard will alert them this Friday that we will be asking for a technology summary from them) PLUS the dean would like us to also interview the chairs of each DEPARTMENT. We can decide all of this at our meeting. These will be summary pieces and we will also include links to our survey where data adds to this information.
By the way, the chairs of the 6 standards committees are:
Standard 1 – Education Candidates (EC)…………C. Coleman
Standard 2 – Assessment Data …………………..M. Brunson
Standard 3 – Field…………………………………..N. Armstrong
Standard 4 – Diversity………………………..…….S. Cole
Standard 5 – Faculty……………………………….M. Finkenberg
Standard 6 – Resources……………………………L. Stewart

Here is the "minimum"
of what each
MUST SHOW (or discuss as a need and take steps
to fix it):
NCATE Sources -
What is Acceptable

http://www.ncate.org/public/faqStandards.asp?ch=4#faq4
STANDARD 1
- TEACHER
CANDIDATES
Precise wording: TC are "able"
to use technology in teaching
Other school personnel = "use" technology in
their practice
Add any pgm documentation = assessment data that demonstrates
TC ability to use technology (E.G., teXes EXAM, required course or portfolio,
etc.)
Note: our new TA TEKS requires teachers to be able to use tech at
the level of what is expected for 8th graders and it will now be expected and
tested (already embeded w/n our program as state requirements). I think this is
(or will certainly become) our strongest
'evidence' that it will be taken
care of. The new TEKS probably has it totally embedded (being approved now /
talk about that collaborative process some).

SURVEY SECTIONS to be added later:
Example: NU: 1:3, Under Do You Prepare TC? / Do your TCs know how to integrate technology to teach content?)
We might report something like
this:
___% of faculty in ____ dept report TCs know how to integrate
technology to teach content (highest category checked). From the comment
section, ___% of these mentioned that they do not follow through on this,
however.
___% of faculty in ____ dept report TCs know "little" about
how to integrate technology....
STANDARD
2 - ASSESSMT
DATA
Precise wording: Report of
progress throughout COE / progress in maintaining the assessment system through
the use of information technologies / regularly shared with candidates and
faculty respectively to help them reflect on their performance and improve
it. Question to ask: Has technology been assessed? (will INTASC, NETS, and
TA TEKS begin requiring this?)
The unit has designed, established,
and maintained a structure and governance system for planning, delivering, and
evaluating programs that includes school practitioners as well as faculty and
administrators in other units of the institution. A key element of that system
is the development and implementation of an assessment system that includes the
gathering and use of candidate performance data, as described under Standard 2,
to ensure that candidates meet standards.
CHAIR of committee: http://www.education.sfasu.edu/ncate/standards/index.htm
SURVEY
SECTIONS to be added later:
Example: NU:2 and BOE:P /
under Do You Prepare TC...
We might report something like
this:
___% of all faculty surveyed
in all departments (73% responding) indicate their department "always" uses
technology to monitor progress of TCs throughout the program. ____% of these
indicated their department "always" used this information to improve their
programs.
STANDARD
3 - FIELD
Precise wording: Clinical practice
"allows candidates to use" information technology to support teaching and
learning.
Clinical faculty provide regular and continuing support for student
teachers and other interns through such processes as observation, conferencing,
group discussion, email, and the use of other technology.
Clinical practice
provides for candidates' use of information technology to support teaching,
learning, and other professional responsibilities.
Expects that candidates
have the "opportunity" in their field and clinical experiences to use technology
to support teaching and learning. We might get by on this one if we report
the technology grants to get computers in schools, the modeling and teaching of
technology in our classes, and the "encouragement" from mentors &
supervisors and college classes to integrate technology during internship
experiences.
We will add what is discovered via survey and possibly add that
this one needs reved up a bit now that we are all begin'g to recognize the
signifiance and ability to improve learning using technology in our
teaching.
CHAIR of committee: http://www.education.sfasu.edu/ncate/standards/index.htm
SURVEY
SECTIONS to be added later:
Example: BOER 3:B:3 / Do You Prepare TC? / Do you encourage TCs to integrate tech into teach'g in the field? which offers a percentage re dept, etc
It could either be incorporated into
this report or added in this way:
___% of TC in_____ dept. are encoruaged by
faculty to integrate technology into their field teachiing experience.
___%
of TC in ____ dept.....
STANDARD 4
-
DIVERSITY
Precise wording: adapt instruction
and services appropriately for all students, including students with
exceptionalities. They demonstrate dispositions that value fairness and learning
by all students.
FAC DEMO ABILITY TO integrate diversity into teaching: http://www.ncate.org/public/faqStandards.asp?ch=4#faq4
From the "ideal" list: faculty integrate diversity and technology
throughout their teaching.

and short history behind it for our national accreditation.
Ask them
specifically about DE: A, Q, and P which is the vision outlined here: http://www.oit.sfasu.edu/disted/facsup/strategicguidelines.html
SURVEY SECTIONS to be added
later: e.g., V-P
Do you use tech to give personal attention &
direction to students?
l00% of all COE faculty use technology to give
personal attention & direction to students. This ranges from email to office
hours in chat rooms (from comment section).
Most Diversity, like
technology, is integrated across the survey
Example: BOER:5:G:1 under
Needs/Access
Is sufficient adaptive technology available to meet your
needs?
We might report something like
this:
80% of faculty surveyed in all dept (73% responding) say they feel they
have sufficient adaptive technology to meet their needs (top category, "much
agree")
STANDARD 5
- FACULTY, both university and
school-based (field)
As we learn ways to improve learning with tech, this
effectiveness is expected to improve.
Precise wording: faculty "demonstrate
the ability to" integrate technology into their teaching
Standard 5 also
mandates that the unit "provides opportunities" for faculty to develop new
knowledge and skills in areas including technology. Needs are assessed and
opportunities for prof development based on these needs is provided.

Integration into Teching / Do you integrate technology into your teaching?
We
might report something like this:
____% of all field teachers
surveyed (68% responding) report integrating technology into their teaching "a
little" (scored 2 out of 4). ___% indicated "none" of the time and ___%
indicated they "always integrate tech into their teaching.
STANDARD
6 - RESOURCES
Precise wording:
expects the unit to have adequate information technology resources to support
faculty and candidates.
NCATE Standard
6 requires that the teacher preparation unit
provides adequate campus and school facilities to support candidates in meeting
standards. http://www.ncate.org/public/faqStandards.asp?ch=4#faq4
Acceptable
Sufficient
resources, including information technology resources, are necessary to offer
all of the programs at the institution that prepare educators to work in
schools, including the delivery of high-quality field experiences and clinical
practice.
The unit receives sufficient budgetary allocations at least
proportional to other units on campus or similar units at other campuses to
provide programs that prepare candidates to meet standards. The budget
adequately supports on-campus and clinical work essential for preparation of
professional educators.
The unit provides an adequate number of support
personnel so that programs can prepare candidates to meet standards. The unit
provides adequate resources and opportunities for professional development of
faculty, including training in the use of technology.
The unit has adequate
campus and school facilities, as well as, electronic support to support
candidates in meeting standards. The facilities support faculty and candidate's
use of information technology in instruction.
The COE provides adequate
resources to develop and implement the unit's assessment plan.
Faculty and candidates have access both to sufficient and current library
and curricular resources and electronic information.
Standard 6 expects the unit (COE) to have the budget, personnel and facilities, including information technology resources to prepare candidates to meet professional, state and institutional standards. The rubrics expect that the budget allocations are at least proportional to other units on campus, that there are sufficient numbers of full-time faculty and support personnel to support programs, that faculty workloads allow faculty to be effectively engaged in teaching, scholarship, and service. It is also expected that facilities support the use of information technology by candidates and faculty, and that faculty and candidates have access to current and sufficient curricular and library resources and electronic information. http://www.ncate.org/public/faqStandards.asp?ch=4#faq4

You might want to travel to the "field" sites and check into Teacher
Candidate and Mentor Teacher ACCESS to technology plus NEEDS expressed. A survey
and possible grants might be suggested as possible sollutions if found to be
inadequate.
SURVEY SECTIONS to be added later:
Example: NU:6:5;
BOER:5:G;1
Under: Other Re Technology: "Do you feel you have sufficient
access to electronic library....
We might report something like
this:
90% of the faculty (78% responding) said they have "some" (yes, some,
little, no) access to an electronic library & curricular
resouces.
