ELE 315, 415, 352 LAB Not certain WHERE this lab will be located; please stop back

This is the LAB portion of ELE 351, ELE 352, and RDG 415
and is worth 3 credits.
You must pass this class to advance to Internship 2.

Internship 1 -  In Fall 09, this class met at Christ Episcopal School 8:15 - 10:15 Mon-Thurs begininng around the 2nd week of SFA classes (updates at orientation); it also meets every TUE at 2pm for an hour to talk about teaching.

WHAT INTERNS  DO and How you will be graded

Each intern will work with a group of 3-4 students daily for half an hour in addition to other teaching assignments.

Literacy Project - Interns will plan daily lessons for that half hour with their group (guided reading and word study) and will keep notes on the progress their students make. They will collect data to document this "case study" and submit these pages for grades throughout the semester (pretesting, planning, reflections, progress monitoring, post testing, video lesson, impact on student, future plans, etc.) . At the end, they will write a professional report telling the entire story about this "case study" experience and the gains their students made. This final paper will be written in 3rd person APA style and it will contain research to support the instructional decisions made. This final paper plus the documents to support this report is called the Literacy Project (it looks something like this) and is worth half of your internship LAB grade which is 500 points. As of spring 2010, this will be submitted entirely online so you should get yourself 'computer ready.'

Teaching - Interns also receive a "teaching grade," which is worth 400 points.  Interns will be observed a minimum of 2 times--once teaching a guided reading lesson and the other time teaching a word study lesson. Informal observations (walk throughs) will also inform the professor decision about this teaching grade.

Professionalism - Finally, there is a professionalism grade worth 100 points, bringing the total to 1,000. This grade reflects attendance and dress, respect for confidentiality regarding students and Fredonia personnel, enthusiasm and participation in LAB class, contribution and "above and beyond" quality of work on all assignments, collaboration and cooperation, use of conventions of our language,
and in general, responsible accountable and ethical behavior.

No books to buy
; online readings and videos using Real One Player will be assigned in class.
IF you have trouble accessing videos
using Real One player, please take care of this now

GET AHEAD
What to do to get a jump on the 519 course: Begin reading your Tompkins book and highlight and take good notes; you will be asked to take quizzes on this material and will review again for the final exam.

What to do to get a jump on the 520 course: Begin reading the Nath book and highlight and take good notes; you will be asked to take re-takable quizzes on this material which will also be covered on the "open book" final exam.

What to do to get a jump on the 503 course:   Please stop back for Summer 2010 recommendations.

What to do to get a jump on the 352 Internship LAB course: Get organized, organized, organized. Watch the videos below. You will be doing guided reading and word study every day with 3 young children. Prepare yourself for this now. When you know what you are doing, the students follow along. When you do not, they cause behavior problems which are hard to change once they begin.  Learn a few top notch "transitions" to spit out quickly to grab their attention. BE INTERESTING by "knowing neat stuff" that will make your students WANT to pay attention to you.
