SFA education students achieve 100 percent pass rate

Stephen F. Austin State University achieved a 100 percent pass rate in the U.S. Department of Education’s Title II Report on teacher candidate testing.

In its 2006 report, released in March 2007, the Department of Education recognized SFA’s College of Education as achieving a perfect pass rate on all state testing requirements for its initial teacher candidates during 2004 - 2005. Only 11 of 69 Texas higher education institutions achieved this rate.

“The U.S. Department of Education’s Title II Report recognizes the College of Education at Stephen F. Austin State University as a state and national leader in the preparation of students entering the education profession as teachers,” said Dr. John Jacobson, dean of the college. “The preparation of teachers is a university-wide effort and reflects the exceptional collaboration evident at SFA. This is a tremendous accomplishment in the attainment of the highest possible Title II Report pass rate in the College of Education’s impressive history.”

Teachers trained at SFA passed all of 424 tests taken. Other institutions in the state achieving a 100 percent pass rate and the numbers of test passed are: University of North Texas, 623; University of Texas-Dallas, 208; University of Houston-Clear Lake, 192; St. Mary’s University, 46; Southwestern Assemblies of God University, 40; Dallas Baptist University 38; Schreiner University, 34; Austin College, 28; Southern Methodist University, 27; University of Dallas, 18; and Rice University, 13.

As required by Title II of the Higher Education Act of 1998, the U.S. Department of Education provides an annual report for Congress and the public on the preparation of teachers. The report is designed to provide feedback on the quality of educator preparation programs and contains information on SFA’s summary pass rate for completers of all programs leading to initial licensure as a teacher and on licensing tests or assessments required by the State Board for Educator Certification.
