Course Description
RDG 503 is a supervised experience in understanding the reciprocal nature of assessment and instruction, types of assessments, and assessment related issues.

Textbook Requirements  May vary from semester to semester.  Internet readings plus required texts:
http://www.education.sfasu.edu/ele/classes/abel/ele520.html

Course Prerequisites
This course is open to graduate students who have been admitted to the Master Reading Teacher certification program or to the graduate program for Reading Specialists and have successfully completed RDG 501 and RDG 502.  It is not an elective course for other graduate courses If you have questions about registering for this course, contact the Director of Reading, Dr. Vi Alexander valexander@sfasu.edu 936.468.1697.

Course Format and Participation Requirements
Students meet in chat rooms to discuss online articles, text readings, and case studies.  The rest of this course is self-paced which involves more reading, discussion board commentary, and completion of a case study (online) which requires locating and working with a young school age child (preferably not your own).

On-campus or Face-to-Face Meeting Requirements
None, unless in unusual situations, the professor finds it necessary to schedule an individual face-to-face meeting to further determine understanding of course content, etc.

Course Assessment
You will be assessed and evaluated on your case study, final exam, and professional and thoughtful response to the readings and chat discussions.

Effort Expected
This is a 3-credit hour course. Graduate students are self-directed learners who realize their learning is maximized by the personal involvement they make in a course.  For those of you who prefer a more definitive answer, a minimum of 15 hours per week seems an appropriate estimate. During the shortened summer sessions, this investment increases, but because we love what we do, we barely notice.

Technical Requirements for the Course

Other than the minimum technical requirements for any course, students will need access to an audio tape player that uses a type 1 normal audio cassette tape (2 1/2 x 4") and mail it to me (unless you can successfully upload a sample of the child's reading inside our private Web-Ct course pages).  Power Point software and Real Player software are recommended for the videos, etc. you will be required to view.
