Course Description A survey of teaching course designed for post baccalaureate students seeking initial certification. This web-based course focuses on the knowledge base necessary to teach effectively in Texas public schools. It gives the student an overview of the many facets of teaching and prepares him/her to assume the roles and responsibilities of being a teacher. Great course for new teachers!

This course is taught completely online.   When you sign up for such a course, it is expected that you have a reliable computer "ready to go" and that your own computer skills are strong on the First Day of Class.  This can become your biggest problem when taking an online course if you don't take care of this BEFORE class begins. http://www.oit.sfasu.edu/webct/forwebct.html

Textbook Requirements
May vary. Course updates: http://www.education.sfasu.edu/ele/classes/abel/ele520.html

Course Prerequisites
Prerequisites - no prerequisite courses but you must be either a Graduate Student in our Graduate Education program OR a PBIC student who has been acceptanced into our Teacher Ed AND Graduate program.   ELE 520 is not an elective course for other graduate programs. Contact for Teacher Ed pgm is Christi Coleman at cwcoleman@sfasu.edu  and PBIC advisor is Dr. Jeanie Gresham 936-468-1884 or 2904 greshamglori@sfasu.edu. Please refer to the links at the bottom of this page that specify requirements.

Prerequisite Skills:  Computer skills needed: send and receive email, attach files to emails, download files, create files in MS Word and web pages using Internet Composer, capture pictures from files and web sites, add pictures to files, and type quickly enough to participate in chat room discussions.

Course Format and Participation Requirements
Students meet once a week in chat rooms to discuss online articles, text readings, and current teaching issues and concerns.  The rest of this course is self-paced which involves more reading, taking retakable quizzes to facilitate content mastery, discussion board commentary, an open book final exam, and completion of several projects (individual and group work) to be presented to the entire class online (usually ppt format).

On-campus or Face-to-Face Meeting Requirements
None, unless in unusual situations, the professor finds it necessary to schedule an individual face-to-face meeting to determine your understanding of course material, etc.

Course Assessment
You will be assessed and evaluated on individual and group projects, quizzes & final, plus professional and thoughtful response to the readings and discussions.

Effort Expected
This is a 3-credit hour course. Graduate level students are self-directed learners who realize their learning is maximized by the personal involvement they make in a course.  For those of you who prefer a more definitive answer, a minimum of 15 hours per week seems an appropriate estimate.  During the shortened summer session, this investment increases, but because we love what we do, we barely notice.

Technical Requirements for the Course

Other than the minimum technical requirements for any course, students will need Microsoft Word,  Netscape Composer, and Real Player.  Power Point software is recommended but not necessary.
